About Joe

Joe brings 12 years of pubilc policy experience, six years of business development experience, and years of nonprofit management experience to the state capitol as your State Representative.

Joe is originally from New Boston, Michigan, a rural community near the Ohio-Michigan border.  The family farm is still operated by his relatives in Milan, Michigan.  Joe's mother was a waitress for 35 years and his father taught elementary art for 33 years.  Joe's brother works in the renewable energy industry. His blue-collar upbringing has taught him to never give up, to work hard, and to serve others.

During the past two and a half years, Joe has worked for PROJECT C.U.R.E., the largest collector and distributor of donated medical supplies and equipment to thousands of doctors, nurses, health care clinics, and hospitals in 125 developing nations around the world, including Haiti.  Joe has traveled to Rwanda and Kenya, Africa on humanitarian trips.

Before working at PROJECT C.U.R.E., Joe worked as the Colorado State Director for Progressive Majority, a statewide, grassroots organization that recruits, trains, and elects fiscally responsible and socially progressive municipal and state candidates throughout Colorado. While at Progressive Majority, Joe also founded the annual Color Colorado Conference, a forum to discuss innovative methods for making the Colorado civic process more inclusive for African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and all people from communities of color.

Prior to working with the Progressive Majority, Joe worked for former Colorado Speaker of the House, Andrew Romanoff as his Director. During the 2003 Colorado legislative session, Joe served as Chief of Staff for former House Minority Leader Jennifer Veiga and the entire Democratic State House Caucus. Joe was responsible for developing both public policy and media strategies for Representative Jennifer Veiga and all 28 State House Democrats.  Before serving as Chief of Staff, Joe was the Director of Operations for former State Representative Dan Grossman.

Before living in Colorado, Joe worked in both the corporate and public sectors in Washington, D.C. For nearly three years, Joe worked as a Legislative Aide for former U.S. Senator Howard M. Metzenbaum of Ohio where he was responsible for representing the Senator’s environmental, health care, and interior positions to constituents. He also researched, drafted, and responded to constituent letters and inquires.

In 1993, Joe also served as a White House intern in the office of Public Liaison in the Clinton Administration.

Besides working for 12 years in the public policy arena, Joe worked six years in the private sector. Joe was a Business Development representative for Aristotle Industries, one of the leading political software companies in the nation. While at Aristotle Industries, Joe was the number one business development representatives for two years.

Before working for Aristotle, Joe helped start an Internet software company by working as a Business Development Manager and the eighth employee at Cyveillance.com. While working at Cyveillance, Joe was responsible for generating 42 percent of the company’s new clients.

Joe also worked as a Business Development representative for two Fortune 500 software manufacturers, Computer Associates and Veritas Software, an industry leader in storage management software solutions.

Joe received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992 from Hope College in Holland, Michigan where he studied both political science and religion. In December, 2004, Joe attended night school at the University of Colorado at Denver Graduate School of Public Affairs program, where he earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration, with a concentration in Nonprofit Executive Management.

Joe has been an active Rotarian for eight years where he has been responsible for helping raise $100,000 for at-risk youth prevention programs in Denver, polio eradication in developing nations, an orphanage and school in Rwanda, Africa, and hosting an annual Veteran's Appreciation Breakfast at the Wings Over Rockies Air and Space Museum - which is attended by over 200 veterans every year.  He also serves on the board of the Rwanda Leadership Foundation, a Colorado-based nonprofit organization that has raised $500,000 in three years to support the leading technology school on the continent of Africa.

He is also a youth civic engagement researcher. His Master’s thesis, which focused on increasing youth civic engagement participation levels, was recently published in the National Civic Review.

Joe and his wife Jennifer reside in southeast Denver, Colorado.  They attend Wash Park Methodist Church.
